Bleeding Cool

Bleeding Cool reports on the largest donation in ComicBooks For Troops history: 100,000 Digital Lizards of Doom graphic novels delivered to military families at five locations.
ComicBooks For Troops has delivered 100,000 Digital Lizards of Doom graphic novels to military families and support organizations at five locations across the country. It is the largest single donation in the charity’s history, and Bleeding Cool’s Rich Johnston has the story.
The idea started at a ComicsPRO reception earlier this year, where creator Gabriel Valentin sat down with Mark Weiss, founder of ComicBooks For Kids! and its sister organization, ComicBooks For Troops. Valentin talked about how many American fourth graders read below grade level, and how often military kids change schools. A request that began at 20,000 books grew to 100,000.

After six months of planning, with funding from a private investor and distribution handled by Mad Cave Studios, 20,000 books from Levels 1 to 5 went to each of five organizations: Operation Support Our Troops-America in Naperville, Illinois; North Carolina Support Our Troops in Ayden; the Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center in Colorado Springs; the Hampton Roads Peninsula bases in Hampton, Virginia; and USO-Washington in Washington, DC.
Weiss told Bleeding Cool that the groups chose Digital Lizards of Doom after learning about the Johns Hopkins study of the curriculum and the multi-school pilot that followed. The team held the announcement until the books had arrived everywhere. You can read about our Patriots Day visit to Mt. Carmel elsewhere in the Newsroom.
